Study 5 – CHRIST’S POWER TO DELIVER AND CLEANSE THE UNCLEAN

Text – Mark 1:21-28

From our text, we will see the demonstration of the power of the Lord Jesus Christ and He is the same today and forever; what He did in days gone by, He is able to do even today. Any time you come to a crossroad in your life, the power of Jesus Christ will work mightily to clear off all those evil power hindering your progress in Jesus Name. Christ has the power to solve all your problems, and you will not go from here empty handed in Jesus Name. He delivers everyone, and whosoever comes to Him He will not deny. He delivers from every challenge and problems and things that are trying to crush our lives. Christ has the power to cleanse as well. He will cleanse from sin, defilement and anything that might try to soil our lives, and present us as white lily, spotless, without any defilement before our Heavenly Father. Christ’s power is for you, your family and everyone connected with you; He will deliver and cleanse them. And anything that brings defiled memories back into your heart, tonight is the night of cleansing and freedom, He will forgive and set you free from every remembrance of those dirty things in Jesus Name.

3 points:

Point 1. HIS CONVICTING PREACHING OF THE UNCHANGEABLE SCRIPTURES

Mark 1:21-22; Matthew 4:14-17; 5:17-20; 6:1-2,19-21,24; 7:24-29; 13:34-35; John 7:45-46; 6:59-60,66; Mark 7:7-8,13; Luke 13:22-29; Matthew 22:16

Jesus Christ is the Word personified. He preached the scriptures because He was the originator with the Holy Spirit inspiring the Scriptures and His preaching is with authority, anointing and power. He is still Christ our Saviour, the Preacher, Teacher and He will teach you tonight by the Spirit in Jesus Name. You will find one word that comes up in both verses 2 and 22 “…and taught” (Mark 1:21). He preached and opened the Scriptures to them. And preached the word of the Lord unto them. “And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes” (Mark 1:22). They were astonished at His preaching, application and interpretation of Scriptures unto them. He opened and expounded the scriptures and taught them as One having authority. How did He preach? Who did He preached to? And what did He preached? And what is He still preaching and emphasizing today? “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying…..” (Matthew 4:14). His preaching was a fulfilment of prophecy and the great expectation that the prophets have spoken about. He preached unto them powerfully, purposefully and authoritatively, and not like the Scribes or Pharisees. See the purpose of His preaching, “The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up” (Matthew 4:16). Christ’s preaching came to show light unto the people that sat in spiritual and total darkness. He came to enlighten them, and He spoke authoritatively to sweep away the darkness of superstition, tradition and errors. His Word brought life to those in the shadow of death and an end to their superstitions, traditions and error. “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). What did He preach? All the blessings and goodness of the Kingdom that they could become beneficiaries now because He is the Door and has the key to that kingdom so that they could enter in and possess all the benefits. He came to teach and preach to open their eyes so that they could understand the Scriptures. “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil” (Matthew 5:17). Christ came to fulfil all the prophecies, promises and precepts of Scriptures and not to oppose or negate them. He came to fulfil and show the significance of the Scriptures in your life. There is nothing you read about in the Scriptures that is redundant or useless, for every jot and tittle will be fulfilled (Matthew 5:18). He taught how to enter and become great and significant when you enter into the Kingdom of God. Tradition, superstitions, the former and old life will hinder people from entering into the kingdom (Matthew 5:20). He was very plain and forthright about the Scriptures. For people to enter in, there must be righteousness by faith, the inner, evangelical and the kind that comes from the Lord Himself, and then it is practical, purposeful and positive with inward grace. For if yours is just like the Pharisees, only outward, lacking the inner grace of Christ, you will not make it into the kingdom of God. The Scriptures He preached to them and the emphasis are unchangeable and still stand today. He taught that don’t do anything that you may be seen or appreciated of men for that kind of life will not get you into the kingdom (Matthew 6:1). He also taught that we should think, plan and store all our treasures in heaven, not just amass wealth here on earth, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal” (Matthew 6:19). Jesus was always talking about Heaven and preachers should do the same and prepare people for Heaven. He also taught that we must not only hear but apply, practice and perform the Word; repent, consecrate and put right whatever needs to be. “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock” (Matthew 7:24). Jesus Christ in His preaching and teaching will always give you the two sides of the coin; that if you do it, this is the consequence, and if you don’t do it, this is the recompense. There are people who only show the one side of the coin, encouraging, motivating and uplifting, but we must do it as Jesus Christ did it (Matthew 7:26-27). “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 13:35). This was why they were surprised and astonished in His preaching, because what they never heard from their preachers, priests, scribes and Pharisees, Jesus taught them. He was not talking tradition or religion but righteousness from on high. When queried by the elders who sent them to arrest Jesus, and they returned without Him, hear their response: “The officers answered, Never man spake like this man” (John 7:46). They were used to hearing the commandment and traditions of men which contradicted the Scriptures, but Christ’s message was different from the Pharisees’. He taught to convict, alert and awaken them to the way of the Kingdom (John 6:59-60,66). Jesus will not repeat the principles, proverbs and all the precepts of men because He is the Word Personified (Mark 7:7-8,13). “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:” (Luke 13:24-25) The people counted the message strange, so they went back, but you will not go back. They did not take in what He taught, they did not repent. Jesus never cut corners with the truth, He did not teach the way of society, religion and of tradition but the way of God; He was true and taught in truth. He was no respecter of persons, not looking for their favour, nor position in society. And this is what we ought to do if we are to preach like Christ today, to preach, emphasize and expound on the truth, and to help the people understand the way into the kingdom of God.

Point 2. HIS CONQUERING POWER OVER ALL UNCLEAN SPIRITS

Mark 1:23-26; 3:11-12; 7:25-29; Luke 4:32-36; 6:17-19; Acts 5:12-16; Zechariah 13:2; Acts 16:16-18; Revelations 16:13-14; Matthew 12:43

His power has not changed, and He has the power to destroy anything that will come against your life; and nothing will be able to touch your life as you live with Christ. His power will work in your life, heart and spirit. Christ has the power, and whatever it is coming from any evil spirit, demon or any direction of darkness, His power will conquer and crush all those spirits and powers out of every life in Jesus Name. “And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out” (Mark 1:23). A man  with an unclean spirit in their synagogue, and the preaching of the Pharisees could not stir him, but now as Jesus preached the word in the power of Holy Ghost, that unclean and evil spirit cried out. “Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24). See that the evil spirit knows much more than the Pharisees about Jesus Christ as the Holy Son of God, for the Pharisees doubted the Sonship of Christ. The unclean spirits even believed in the final judgement. So if you don’t believe and know as much as the evil spirits about Jesus Christ, how can you be saved? They believed but have no hope of being saved. I pray that you will go beyond the evil and unclean spirits, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and say: (a) I know that Jesus is the Christ; (b) I know that there is going to be judgement in the final day; (c) I know that Jesus is the sinless, spotless Holy One of God.

“And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him” (Mark 1:25-26). The evil spirit obeyed the voice of Christ to come out of that man. Those who hear the word of God to come out of the world, and do not obey, the evil spirit have gone beyond them. Pray that the evil spirits will not go beyond and be more obedient than you. Christ Jesus has the power, a conquering and controlling power He has, and the power to cast out every unclean spirit. “And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God” (Mark 3:11). I hope you believe that Jesus is the Son of God. The evil spirits knew this, so there should be no doubt in your mind about Jesus being the Son of God; you must believe this if you want to get heaven. Wherever the evil spirits are operating and whatever they expressed, Jesus always conquered them. And in whatever area they are operating today in your life, Jesus will conquer them for you, and they will not trouble you anymore in Jesus Name (Mark 7:25-29). The child of God is the first beneficiary of deliverance, dominion, liberation, and whatever binds you, you will be liberated in Jesus Name. Always say, ‘yes Lord’ to the Lord’s preaching, correction, rebuke, teaching, and exhortations. His word is still with power, He is unchanging even today (Luke 4:32). Jesus will rebuke every negative power in your life. “And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases” (Luke 6:17). They had a purpose why they came: to hear and listen to those unchangeable words of the Scriptures out of the mouth of Him that is of the Truth, and they were healed. Christ demonstrated that conquering power while He was on earth. But now, what happened when He went to heaven? The Name and Authority of Jesus still carries the same power with His disciples and apostles today. “Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one” (Acts 5:15,16). The Holy Ghost inside Peter with his shadow healed all the people, and the Lord will touch and heal you today in Jesus Name.

Unclean spirits do not only manifest by shouting. There are some people that have unclean spirit and may not shout, but whatever they plan to do against your life, the Lord will cut them off in Jesus Name. “And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land” (Zechariah 13:2). There are false prophets with unclean spirits. They may say they prophesy, see visions and because some of those things might come to pass, there are some people that will go to them so that they can pray and lay hands on them, but God forbid that in your life. Evil spirits can say some things that appear true, as the damsel possessed with a spirit of divination. “The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation” (Acts 16:17). Apostle Paul was not deceived. Unclean spirits will do anything for you to submit to their master the devil and follow after them to where they are destined – hell fire. They don’t always shout, cut themselves and bring out blood or cause quarrel, and sometimes they try to do some things that look like miracles. “For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty” (Revelations 16:14). I pray that the evil spirits will not affect or influence you, nor have a way in your heart and life in Jesus Name.

“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation” (Matthew 12:43-45). There are some people when they are cleansed from unclean spirits, they became careless, and when the unclean spirits discover that there is a crack in their life, they come back with more unclean spirits. I pray your heart will never be empty, but the Word, promises, grace and love of God will fill your heart, and the evil spirits will find no room in your life in Jesus Name.

Point 3. HIS CURRENT PURGING AND CLEANSING FROM UNCOUNTABLE SINS

Mark 1:27-28; Psalms 40:12; 19:12-13; 51:2,7; 65:2-5; Hebrews 1:3; 9:14-15,22; Ezekiel 36:25-27; Isaiah 6:5-7; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Ephesians 5:25-27; 1 John 1:7,9

He does it currently and today for every life that calls upon Him today, and thank God you are here tonight, and you are free; His power will work mightily in your life. The unclean spirits make people unclean, defiled, dirty and unfit for the kingdom. Unclean spirit will cause unclean language, lifestyle, behaviour, and habits, but Jesus has power to cleanse and purge everyone from uncountable sins and make us whiter than snow with no stain nor spot defiling our lives. Our sins are innumerable, deep, broad and wide (Psalms 19:12). “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” (Psalms 51:7). The Psalmist knew that He could do it, and He will do this in every one of our lives in Jesus Name. “……when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3). Christ purges our sins. He is still doing it today and He will do it for everyone and they will no more have dominion over us in Jesus name. He is Christ our Saviour, Redeemer, and Propitiation for all our sins, and no matter how many those sins are, He purges us (Hebrews 9:14). He has shed His blood and it is through that blood shed on the Cross at Calvary that He purges, cleanses our consciences and takes away all the guilt of sins and condemnation (Hebrews 9:22). As you come to the Lord today, though you may not have the unclean spirit that torments, but this unclean habit in your life and heart, that you bring to the Lord, He will set you free today and cleanse you from all defilement. It is not the Holy Spirit or Scriptures that made Isaiah to be of unclean lips but the unclean spirit (Isaiah 6:5), but He will cleanse your mouth and language. “And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged” (Isaiah 6:7).  Present yourselves before the Lord, and He will do deep, great, supernatural and spiritual purging in your life. “That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27). You will be holy and without blemish because He will thoroughly cleanse, purge and purify every one of us. His blood will cleanse us from all sins and unrighteousness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). All those people that were cleansed from unclean spirits came and told the Lord Jesus that they wanted His virtues to flow into their lives. They asked and believed and the Lord cleansed them. Thank God for those of us who are saved, sanctified and have the victory; but we still need more of the cleansing power and purging of the Lord Jesus Christ, and as we come to Him to purge us more and make us whiter than snow that no spot, wrinkle or unclean thing will in any way attach itself to our lives, He will do it. He will do it for every one of us in Jesus’ name.
